An area of pre-18th century open-cast iron ore mining known locally as scowles. The scowles are found in an area of modern tipping. The area covered by the scowles forms an elongated lozenge shape aligned north west-south east. This band is 100 metres across at its north end and 200 metres across at its south end, with a total length of about 600 metres. Scowles at the south-eastern corner of the area are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. Scheduled.
