The nearest postcode is an aid to location, and does not necessarily reflect the actual address of the monument. Most scheduled monuments are not occupied buildings and have no postal address or postcode of their own. In rural and coastal areas, the nearest geocodable postal address may be several miles away.
The plan by Francis Gibson of 1782 showing the alum house, also marks the 'ruins of a pier' to the north of the alum house. The line of this can still be traced by boulders although 2001 aerial photographs show only a few at the seaward end adjacent to the ramp or rutway (HS6). This ramp may have been reached by the pier but precise location remains unknown. A document in the PRO records a pier near Saltwick in 1519.
