A medieval square homestead moat, circa 75 metres across, is situated within Moat Wood on the south western outskirts of East Hoathly village. The moat arms are 19 metres in width and range in depth, from 0.3 metres on the southwest side to 1.3 metres on the northeast side. The northwest and part of the northeast sections are wet, the remainder of the moat is marshy. There are stretches of outer retaining bank around the west corner and along the north-east side. The cutting of drainage ditches has destroyed the outer slope of the moat and retaining bank at the east corner. Otherwise the moat is in fair condition.
