The remains of a motte and bailey castle located immediately west of St. John's Church. The flat-topped, steep-sided oval motte measures approximately 30 metres by 34 metres at the base, 9 metres by 12 metres across the top and stands to a height of around 8 metres. It is surrounded by a ditch, which survives to a depth of about 1 metre on the northern side. The bailey is located north of the encircling ditch, and measures approximately 60 metres long and up to 30 metres wide internally. It is defined on its eastern side by a 1.2 metre high scarp and on the north-western and south-western sides by low banks up to 0.5 metres high. A ditch, measuring around 3 metres in width but now infilled, surrounds these banks. Immediately to the north of the earthwork remains is a field of ridge and furrow, which may be associated with the castle. The eastern and southern sides of the motte and bailey have been damaged by the construction of buildings over the last two centuries. Scheduled.
