The nearest postcode is an aid to location, and does not necessarily reflect the actual address of the monument. Most scheduled monuments are not occupied buildings and have no postal address or postcode of their own. In rural and coastal areas, the nearest geocodable postal address may be several miles away.
A large sub-rectangular homestead moat surrounds Fairstead Farmhouse. The house is essentially early 18th century but not outstanding. The moat, dug into a gentle North-West slope, measures overall 120.0m North-West to South-East by 80.0m transversely, with arms 10.0m wide and up to 3.0m deep. Only the West and part of the South arms are waterfilled, with the original entrance crossing the West arm and a later bridge across the South-West angle. An inner scarp 0.5m high is visible across the inside of the deep East arm.
