Site of a Roman villa with a Bath House excavated in C19th and in 1969-71 on the site of 1st century AD Iron Age occupation
A "clarissima femina" who was a civis Dumnonia, buried at Salona at the beginning of the fifth century (Diehl, Inscr. Lat. Christ. Vet., I, 1924-31, no. I85) , must have had large estates in Devonshire to have been of senatorial rank. Her British mansion may well have been the villa at Uplyme. St Melania the Younger (383-439), who had vast domains in Sicily (Vit. St Mel., I8), also held land in Britain.
