Most scheduled monuments are not occupied buildings and have no postal address or postcode of their own. In rural and coastal areas, the nearest geocodable postal address may be several miles away.
Two buildings seen on aerial photographs as cropmarks in a ploughed field south of Long Melford represent a possible winged building, presumed to be a Roman villa, and a small subsidiary building. The buildings are circa 200 yards apart. There is a dense surface scatter of tile (mainly roof), flints (presumably building material), and Roman pottery of the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. The site is scheduled as a Roman villa. A small part of the scheduled area was excavated in 1989 in advance of construction of the Long Melford by-pass. Only a few features, mainly ditches, were identified, and very little dating evidence was recovered.
