Description

The monument comprises the remains of two groups of huts. An enclosure with three huts inside (CN127A) and 80m S and uphill of A, a second group of 3 unenclosed round huts (Cn127B), all probably date to the first millennium BC. A number of terraced field banks lie within and outside the scheduled area.

CN127A A well preserved and enclosed hut group with associated terraced fields. The enclosure is terraced into a NW facing slope, 1.5m high on the lower side. The enclosing grass-covered stone bank is about 1.8m wide and there is an entrance on the SE side 3.7m wide. A second enclosing bank on the E side may indicate an earlier phase. There are two huts inside, hut A has on internal diameter of 5.5m and is 1m deep, with an entrance on the E side. Hut B has an internal diameter of 6m with an entrance on the SE. The remains of another hut lie N of hut B, this hut may pre-date the present enclosure wall.

CN127B A settlement of two, possibly three round huts and an enclosure. Hut 1, furthest N, has an internal diameter of 7m. A modern field wall overlies the N side. There is a small spring just below the hut. Hut 2 is better preserved. It has been levelled into the slope and has an internal diameter of 8m; the wall is double faced and 1.2m wide. Eight metres S of hut 2 is a terraced area with a wall running around the S side, which could be the site of another hut. Twelve metres E of hut 2 is a large terraced enclosure, measuring 16m E-W. A modern field wall runs through the enclosure.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement practices. It is an important relic of the prehistoric landscape and retains significant archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of environmental and structural evidence, including preserved internal and external floor levels.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
