Description

The monument comprises the remains of a group of shielings dating to the pre-Improvement period aligned along an embanked roadway.

The monument lies on moorland along the W bank of the Burn of Edramucky at an altitude of from around 440m to 500m OD. It comprises 12 shielings, each rectangular with dimensions averaging approximately 7m by 3m. The remains are of denuded drystone construction and are open on their uphill ends. They are quite distinct in form from nearby groups of shielings to the N and E which appear to incorporate more turf construction.

An embanked and metalled roadway runs through the group, following the course of the Burn of Edramucky. Several of the group have been subject to partial restoration but this does not appear to have disturbed archaeological deposits within and around the structures. The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and the area immediately around and between them. It is irregular in shape with maximum dimensions of 360m NNE-SSW by 100m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of pre-improvement social and economic conditions. Its importance is greatly enhanced by its association with the wider landscape of pre-improvement farming remains in the vicinity.
