Description

The monument comprises the remains of a pit-defined cursus of Neolithic date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The cursus lies on a distinct level terrace in otherwise sloping arable farmland at around 80m OD. It comprises 2 parallel lines of substantial pits running N-S for a distance of approximately 150m. The lines of pits are set some 30m apart and join in a rounded terminal at the S end. The N terminal is less clear but may lie some 25m S of the N edge of the field. The interior is subdivided by a transverse line of pits about 125m from the S end.

Cursus monuments represent ritual sites of the Neolithic period and are found widely across Britain. The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible remains and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is polygonal with maximum dimensions of 220m N-S by 90m E-W as marked in red on the accompanying map.
