The monument comprises the remains of a medieval motte surviving as a large earthen mound.
The monument lies in woodland at around 35m OD. It comprises a steep-sided motte up to 8m high above the surrounding land, its level top measuring about 17m by 21m. It is surrounded by a ditch some 2m wide, with traces of a bank about 0.5m high on the counterscarp on the N side.
It would originally have been the site of a timber castle of 12th century or slightly later date. The top and sides are obscured by vegetation and fallen trees, and a modern obelisk and retaining wall occupy parts of the summit.
The area to be scheduled encompasses the motte and an area around it in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is circular with a diameter of 80m as marked in red on the accompanying map. It excludes the above-ground stone-built features.
