Description

The monument comprises the remains of an enclosure of prehistoric

date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The enclosure is D-shaped, formed by a semi-circular ditch backing on

to the Bell Burn. The ditch is approximately 3-4m wide with no

visible break to indicate the presence of an entrance. Both ends of

the ditch, however, fade out towards the S as they approach the burn. The enclosed area measures approximately 100m E-W by 70m N-S and lies

on level ground in a locally high position with extensive views in

all directions. There are no visible indications of internal

features. The site appears from its siting and morphology to

represent the remains of an enclosed iron age domestic site.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features together

with an area around them in which traces of contemporary activity may

be expected to survive. It is irregular in shape with maximum

dimensions of 150m E-W by 120m as marked in red on the accompanying

map.
