Description

The monument comprises the remains of a later prehistoric palisaded enclosure and a prehistoric burial cairn. The monument was originally scheduled in 1972, but the area covered by the designation did not relate accurately to the remains on the ground. The current rescheduling rectifies this.

The enclosure is situated on the small rocky knoll on the E flank of White Hill. It is roughly oval on plan and measures about 71m from NE to SW by 50m transversely, within a shallow palisade trench up to 0.7m in width. The N half of the enclosure has been obscured by rig cultivation. The cairn is situated in the SW part of the enclosure and is visible as a circular stony mound about 10m in diameter and 0.7m in height.

The area to be scheduled is oval on plan and measures a maximum of 85m from NE to SW by 65m transversely. It includes the remains described and an area around in which related material may be expected to survive, as shown in red on the attached map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric settlement, economy and social organisation. Its importance is further enhanced by its proximity to other settlement sites of similar date but different form.
