Description

The castle occupies the eastern part of Am Fraoch Eilean, a roughly triangular plateau, detached from the main part of the island by a narrow N-S gulley. The only standing structure is the gound floor of a tower house, l4.3m N-S by 11.3m E-W, with walls some 2.4m thick and a door on the N. Traces of an enclosing bank and ditch survive on the N, S and E. The area to be scheduled measures some 80m E-W by

50m N-S.

Statement of Scheduling

The castle, dating probably from the 15th century, is of national importance as the only late Medieval fortified site on Jura. It has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of Medieval fortification and settlement.
