Description

The monument comprises two circular house stances of the Later Bronze Age or Iron Age between 2000 and 3000 years old, located on a raised area between the farm roads of Monzie and Shinagag. The eastern is of massive build, measuring 9m in diameter within a bank up to 3m broad, the central area being raised above the surrounding ground level. The eastern circle is built in an apparently natural scoop. It is less substantial than its neighbour but this may reflect an original difference in scale, or even greater age. An area measuring a maximum of 45m (NE-SW) x 40m transversely is proposed for scheduling to include the two stances and a small area around in which traces of activity associated with their use will survive.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a well preserved example of a small farmstead which has the potential to enhance our understanding of settlement in the prehistoric period. It is of particular interest because of the great difference between the two stances; examination of these and different functions the buildings may have had would provide information of considerable importance. The importance of the monument is increased by the presence of different types of Late Bronze Age/Iron Age settlement structure in the area; once again comparison of the different forms and functions would be valuable.
