Description

The monument is an enclosed settlement of the Iron Age, some 2000 years old, situated in mature woodland and an area recently cleared of woodland, between the A914 road on the E and a gravel quarry on the W. It measures c 112m N-S by a maximum of c 50m E-W over a bank up to 1m high. The bank is paralleled by an external ditch c 3m across and up to 1m deep. Although the interior is featureless the remains of domestic and other structures are likely to survive below the level of the topsoil. An area measuring a maximum of 150m NNE-SSW by 85m transversely is proposed for scheduling, to include the enclosure and an area around it in which traces of activities associated with its construction and uase will survive.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a well preserved settlement of the Iron Age which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of settlement and economy in later prehistory. It is of particular importance because very few monuments of any period survive as upstanding monuments in this part of lowland Scotland.
