Description

The monument is a scooped homestead of the Iron Age, situated on the N slope of Fasset Hill. It consists of three elements, the largest being a slightly hollow oval enclosure measuring c 30m NE-SW by 15.5m within a bank now standing to a maximum of 0.6m high. The remains of at least one timber house will survive beneath the topsoil. Adjoining the enclosure on the NW are two scooped hollows; the westernmost contains what may be the remains of a rectangular pre-improvement building. The area proposed for scheduling to include the homestead and an area around in which traces of the use of the settlement will survive, measures 85m in diameter, centred on the homestead, as marked in red on the attached map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a well preserved homestead which has the potential to enhance considerable our understanding of prehistoric settlement. It is of particular importance because it lies in a complex landscape, in which remains of prehistoric and medieval settlement survive in good condition; this monument is an importance part of that preserved landscape fragment. Taken with the other monuments in the area it has the potential to increase our knowledge of the development and use of the prehistoric and historic landscape.
