Description

The monument comprises two grassy barrows, prehistoric burial mounds, which are situated on the top of low knolls in a field of pasture.

The westernmost barrow measures 17.5m from SW to NE by 15m transversely and stands up to 2.25m high; the knoll on which it stands has been terraced to gather material for the barrow, creating a level area around the barrow. This level area measures approximately 5m in width.

The easternmost barrow is smaller and appears to contain some stone. Oval on plan, it measures 15m by 8.5m and is up to 1.2m high.

The areas to be scheduled are circular on plan and measure 50m and 40m in diameter respectively, to include the barrows and an area around each in which associated remains may survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because they are well preserved examples of prehistoric barrows, probably Bronze Age in date, which are not common in this area of Scotland. Their value is enhanced by the fact that they complement a significant local grouping of broadly contemporary funerary and ritual monuments, such as burial cairns, enclosed cremation cemeteries, long cairns and cist cemeteries (such as that recently discovered at West Water reservoir). These barrows therefore have the potential to provide information about prehistoric burial and social practice. The possibility of associated settlement evidence nearby is considerable.
