The monument is a late prehistoric or Medieval fortified dwelling or dun.
The fort is situated on, and totally occupies the area of, an island in the S part of Loch Shiavat. The remains of a causeway approach it from the SW. The dun is circular and grass covered having a diameter of approximately 14m. The outer defence wall on the NE and S sides stands to a height of 1.2m and is about the same thickness.
The area to be scheduled is circular measuring a maximum of 15m in diameter, to include the dun as shown on the attached map in red.

The monument is of national importance because it is a well preserved example of a lightly-built Iron Age of medieval dun which due to its inaccessibility and water-logged condition preserves archaeological material which could, through excavation, contribute to our knowledge of defensive settlement, society and agricultural practices in the later prehistoric or early medieval period.
