Description

The monument comprises an enclosed settlement, of medieval/post-medieval date, lying within a field system. The settlement lies in a scoop 43m (ENE-WSW) x 37m transversely. It has been slightly scooped into the uphill side, where it is bounded by a scarp 1.3m high. On the other 3 sides it is bounded by the remains of a stone wall 0.9m high and spread to 4.2m across. The original entrance lies on the ENE. A number of scoops in the interior probably mark the position of timber buildings on all sides but to the W and SW the settlement is surrounded by rig and furrow cultivation. To the N and NE this cultivated area is bounded by a ditch and bank. It is bounded to the W by Whitegill Sike. The boundary bank is under the stone dyke at the NE (the NE property boundary of Effgill Farm) some 38m to the NW of the track.

Statement of Scheduling

The site is nationally important to the themes of medieval/post medieval settlement, economy and agricultural practice. It is important because of its field characteristics: its whole field system survives. It is important in the group of settlements of this period, notably the other monuments of the period in the same valley: the study of these monuments together will contribute significantly to the understanding of the rural settlement and economy of the period.
