Description

The monument is a settlement of the Iron age (some 2000 to 3000 years old) situated on a spur overlooking the Kelphope Burn. The monument is roughly oval in plan and has been enclosed by a single bank with external ditch to the NE. There is no trace of a ditch around the S end of the site (there may never have been one here). The bank survives to c 1m high at the NE end but is much lower around the rest of the site and is missing for a short distance in the middle of the SE side. The entrance appears to have been on the NW side. The interior is covered by heather which obscures any detail but there is at least one enclosure inside the site. The monument measures c 120m (NE-SW) by c 65m transversely. The area to be proposed for scheduling includes the settlement and an area around it in which traces of activity associated with its use will survive. The area respects the shape of the monument and measures 140m (NE-SW) by 90m transversely.
