Description

The monument comprises a burial cairn of prehistoric date, visible as a grass covered stony mound.

The monument lies at the side of an arable field, at around 60m OD. It consists of a circular stony mound or cairn, measuring about 15m in diameter and about 1.8m in height. Limited excavations of its surface during the nineteenth century revealed the remains of a burial cist at a shallow depth below the summit.

The remains of this excavation are represented by a slight hollow on the present surface of the cairn. Further burials may be expected to be preserved within and below the cairn.

The cairn is characteristic of funerary monuments of the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the cairn and an area around it within which related material may be expected to be found. It is a truncated circle on plan with a maximum diameter of 40m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract. The field wall which bounds the monument on its NE side is itself excluded from the scheduling.
