Description

The monument comprises a hut circle of prehistoric date, and a series of associated cairns, visible as a scatter of earthworks and stony mounds.

The monument lies in rough grassland, on the NE margins of a lochan, at around 320m OD. It comprises a hut circle with an internal diameter of about 7m, defined by a wall measuring some 2m wide. Hut circles such as this are characteristic of Bronze and Iron Age settlement sites and represent the remains of timber-roofed roundhouses.

Close to the N and NW of the hut circle are the remains of a series of low cairns. These may be the result of stone clearance associated with prehistoric cultivation, but they are equally likely to have been used for burial, particularly given the clear presence of other burial cairns in the locality.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is rectangular with maximum dimensions of 125m approximately NW-SE by 75m transversely, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
