Description

The monument comprises the remains of a palisaded enclosure, a settlement site of later prehistoric date, normally visible only from the air as differences in crop growth.

The enclosure lies on a slight rise on relatively level ground, probably a post-glacial terrace of the River Spey. It measures about 55m to 60m across, is a near-circular oval on plan, and appears to consist of a single narrow ditch. This probably represents the bedding trench for a timber palisade. There is no definite sign of an entrance on available photographs, but these do not show the complete circuit with equal clarity.

Although the surface of the monument has been ploughed flat, excavation on similar sites on many occasions has demonstrated that there is good potential on such cropmark sites for the survival of occupation deposits and structural features.

The monument is crossed by high-voltage power lines, but no tower or pylon stands within the area to be scheduled.

The area to be scheduled is circular and 95m across, to include the palisaded enclosure, its interior and an area around it in which related remains may survive. It is indicated in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a rare example of a palisade enclosure surviving in a Highland strath. It has the potential to provide important information about later prehistoric settlement construction and domestic economy.
