Description

The monument comprises a large grass-covered mound which is formed by the remains of an Iron Age fortified structure, or dun.

The dun lies at the foot of the W slope of Beinn na Coille. It is circular, with a diameter of about 18m, and stands up to 3m high. The centre is slightly hollowed. A few stones of what appears to be the outer wall face show on the SE side. A rectangular foundation showing on the top of the mound, and several smaller foundations nearby, probably represent medieval or later re-use of the site.

The area to be scheduled is a circle 45m in diameter to include the mound and the adjacent foundations, as well as a surrounding area in which associated remains are likely to survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a well-preserved Iron Age fortified settlement with remains which may indicate later re-use. The location of the monument is unusual in this area, and it may represent the re-modelling of an earlier construction, conceivably a Neolithic chambered tomb.
