Description

The monument comprises an enclosed settlement of prehistoric date, visible as a cropmark on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland and is situated close to the northern edge of an old river terrace at about 20m OD, immediately S of the A913 trunk road. The enclosure appears to be roughly oval in plan, although the eastern arc of the enclosing ditch is not visible on the available aerial photographs.

Internally, the enclosure measures a minimum of 30m from NW to SE by about 24m transversely. The width of the ditch appears to vary considerably, from 6m on the SW to little more than 1m on the NE side. A roughly circular cropmark, about 4m in diameter, is visible in the N part of the interior and probably indicates the position of a roundhouse.

Enclosed settlements of this type are characteristic of the Iron Age. The settlement probably dates to some time in the thousand-year period from about 500 BC to AD 500.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to survive. It is circular with a diameter of 60m, as marked on the accompanying map.
