Description

The monument comprises the remains of a vitrified fort of later prehistoric date. It is being rescheduled because the original scheduled area was not large enough to include all of the archaeologically important area.

The fort is an elongated oval in shape, measuring approximately 150m by 40m internally, within a vitrified wall some 6m thick. Vitrification is a result of the intense heat caused by the burning of a timber-laced stone wall. Excavations during the 1930s and the 1970s revealed the remains of numerous structures within the fort and provided radiocarbon dates centred on the mid-1st millennium BC.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible remains of the fort and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is irregular in shape with maximum dimensions of 190m ENE-WSW by 90m as marked in red on the accompanying map.
