The monument consists of a cup and ring marked rock on the SE slope of Cambret Hill, near to its foot.
The rock measures only a little over 1m across, and bears the carvings of two cupmarks, one surrounded by three rings, the other by seven. These are probably of early Bronze Age date, perhaps about 1500 BC.
The area to be scheduled is a circle of diameter 15m, to include the rock and an area around in which evidence relating to its carving or any ritual activity may survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance as one of a large group of such carvings, probably of Bronze Age date, in Galloway. The purpose of these carvings is not known, but they may be an expression of the territorial possession or claims of different social groups. Study of these monuments may, in time, contribute to our understanding of prehistoric social organisation.
