Description

The monument comprises the remains of an Iron Age broch, partly excavated in the 1890s. First scheduled in 1934, the present proposal extends the protected area to include the whole area of archaeological importance.

Clumlie broch is set on a mound on a gently-sloping hillside, almost surrounded by the remains of crofts, now abandoned but partly roofed and used for agricultural purposes. The interior of the broch plus its outer side on the E were excavated by Gilbert Goudie late in the 19th century, and many details can still be clearly traced: a central hearth, an inner "casing" wall and the details of the entrance, which survives to lintel height with a guard cell on the right-hand side on entry and door-jambs partway down, are particularly evident. The outer facing wall of the broch has been largely rebuilt where exposed. To the W, the broch's outer face is not exposed, and it is likely that there are additional remains preserved below modern ground level.

The area now to be scheduled is a circle of diameter 32m, to include the broch and a small area outside it in which remains associated with its construction and use may survive, as shown in red on the accompanying map extract.
