Description

The monument comprises two standing stones and a mound of prehistoric date. The stones themselves are already scheduled, but not the mound or the surrounding area where archaeological deposits are likely to exist. This proposal rectifies these omissions.

The monument stands on moorland at around 220m OD. It comprises a flat-topped stone some 2m high by approximately 5m in circumference at base, and another stone some 60m NE approximately 2.6m high. The NE stone leans slightly to the N, and is positioned on the S edge of a mound some 11m N-S by about 9.5m, possibly a burial monument. On the E side of this stone about 0.4m up from the ground is a carving, approximately 5cm by 10cm in size, of five short, nearly horizontal lines enclosed in a rectangular box.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible remains and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is rectangular with maximum dimensions of 120m NE-SW by 30m as marked in red on the accompanying map.
