Description

The monument consists of a prehistoric chambered burial cairn. The cairn is a largely turf-covered mound set on a small knoll about 50m from the public road. In the centre of the mound is a trefoil- shaped chamber built of large slabs, and originally entered via a passage from the SE side of the cairn.

What may be roofing slabs lie displaced in the chamber and the line of the passage, and three further slabs on the SE side of the cairn may be remnants of a facade.

The area to be scheduled is circular, 30m in diameter and centred on the cairn, as shown in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a good example of a small chambered cairn. Although probably robbed, enough survives to provide important information about the form and construction of such monuments. The monument has the potential, through excavation and analysis, to provide information relating to prehistoric burial practices and ritual, and, from buried soils, contemporary land-use and environmental conditions.
