Description

The monument comprises the remains of a prehistoric chambered burial cairn, situated on Hill of Fielie, just E of the summit.

The cairn, which commands sweeping views over the island and the West Mainland coast of Shetland beyond, is of "heel-shaped" plan, with a concave facade facing SE. From facade to back is 10m and from side to side about 12m. The cairn is reduced to a maximum height of 1.2m. It is partly turf-covered, but larger boulders, defining the facade and most of the kerb, protrude. In the centre, the original detail is obscured by a more recent cairn, but the plan of the burial chamber almost certainly survives beneath this.

The area to be scheduled is circular, 40m in diameter, to include the cairn and a small area around in which associated remains may survive. It is shown in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a small prehistoric burial cairn which displays the characteristic Shetland 'heel-shaped' plan to advantage. Although the burial chamber may have disturbed, it is likely that further archaeological deposits survive within the cairn, and these could provide important information about prehistoric ritual and funerary practice and contemporary economy.
