The monument consists of a burnt mound, a prehistoric cooking place.
The burnt mound is set on the N side of a small seasonal loch. It is a very substantial example, some 20m by 18m and over 2m high. It is crescentic on plan, with its open side towards the loch.
The area to be scheduled is irregular, bounded on the S by the shoreline of the loch. It measures a maximum of 65m WNW-ESE by 40m, as marked in red on the accompanying map.

The monument is of national importance as a fine example of a burnt mound, a cooking place normally ascribed to the Bronze Age, at least in the Northern Isles. It has the potential to provide information about prehistoric agricultural and domestic economy.
