Description

The monument comprises a burnt mound, a prehistoric cooking place.

This mound is located in a small valley in low hills, near to a tiny seasonal loch. The mound is 9m by 6.5m and almost 2m high. It is of unusual plan, with one side of the usual horse-shoe shaped plan represented not by an extension of the mound but by a platform of small stones. At one end of this platform is a small oval enclosure, 3.7m by 3.4m internally. Without excavation, it cannot be ascertained whether the unusual plan is original or the result of later disturbance.

The area to be scheduled is a circle 30m across, to include the mound and a small area around in which associated remains are likely to survive, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance as a burnt mound of unusual plan, which may have potential to provide important information about the structure and detailed purposes of such mounds. In addition, it forms part of an important grouping of settlement and allied sites, which together have the potential to throw light on the range and variety of pre-Iron Age settlement forms in Shetland.
