Description

The monument comprises the remains of a prehistoric burial chamber dating from the Neolithic period (c.4000-2000BC). The monument was originally scheduled in 1962 but the area covered by the designation was not clearly defined in the documentation. The rescheduling proposal rectifies this.

The monument stands at 25m OD on gently sloping land overlooking Fleet Bay, 400m to the SE. The site comprises the megalithic elements of a prehistoric burial chamber that would originally have been covered by a substantial cairn. The chamber is defined by four tall corner slabs defining a rectangular area roughly 2m long by 1m wide. Low slabs mark the edges and ends of the chamber and a substantial flat stone lying on the floor of the chamber may originally have formed part of the roof of the structure. The corner stones stand up to 1.7m high, but the SW stone now leans heavily towards the centre of the chamber. Although most of the original monument has been removed, this site may still preserve important archaeological evidence beneath the ground surface.

The area proposed for scheduling is a circle 20m in diameter centred on the chamber to include the features described above and an area around and between them where remains relating to their construction and use may be expected to survive, as marked in red on the attached map.
