The monument comprises a group of cup and ring marked rocks of prehistoric date. It is in the care of the Scottish Ministers and is being re-scheduled to clarify the extent of the protected area.
The monument lies within three small fenced enclosures, two in arable farmland and one in unmanaged grassland, at around 70m OD. It comprises a number of rock outcrops bearing carved cup and ring marks. The carvings consist of simple cups, or cups surrounded by up to 6 concentric rings. Some of the rings are complete, while others are incomplete or gapped. The rings measure up to about 40cm in diameter, and several of the cup marks are joined by connecting grooves. Cup and ring marks are decorative circular depressions carved into standing stones, outcrops of bedrock and boulders, and are sometimes found arranged in patterns with other motifs. They are thought to date principally to the Neolithic and Bronze Age and to have been related to acts of ritual and religious significance.
The three areas proposed for scheduling comprise the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. The northernmost area is sub-rectangular, with maximum dimensions of about 18m from its northernmost point to its southernmost point and 17m from its easternmost point to its westernmost point, bounded by a fence. The easternmost area is rectangular, with maximum dimensions of about 17m from its northernmost point to its southernmost point and 17m from its easternmost point to its westernmost point, bounded by a fence. The southernmost area is rectangular, with sides measuring a maximum of 17m from the northernmost to the southernmost point, and 17m from the easternmost to the westernmost points, bounded by a fence. All three are areas are marked in red on the accompanying map extract. All three areas proposed for scheduling are identical to the areas in care.
