Description

The monument, also known as Y Gaer, comprises the remains of a small earthwork defended enclosure, which probably dates to the Iron Age / Romano-British periods (c. 800 BC - AD 400). It is located on the N side of a rounded W-facing inland promontory above NW-facing slopes. The enclosure is roughly square in shape and measures 38m across. A bank defends the interior and has been partly reduced in height and spread in width by later agricultural activities. The bank measures up to 0.6m in height and 8m in width. The entrance is located on the S side. The ditch is not visible.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of later prehistoric defensive organisation and settlement. The site forms an important element within the wider later prehistoric context and within the surrounding landscape. The site is well preserved and retains considerable archaeological potential. There is a strong probability of the presence of evidence relating to chronology, building techniques and functional detail.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and an area around within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It is roughly square in shape on plan and measures 70m N-S by 70m E-W.
