The monument consists of a free standing cross probably dating to the early medieval or medieval period, which sits to the side of the path on the north side of the church. Although the cross itself is missing, the octagonal shaft is c. 1.7m in height and has a diameter of 0.3m, it tapers slightly from top to bottom and the lower corners are chamfered. It has an octagonal capital which is decorated with a worn fleur-de-llys. The shaft sits on a square base which is 2m in height and has sides measuring 3.7m, at ground level.
The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of the organisation and practice of Christianity. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits. A cross may be part of a larger cluster of monuments and their importance can further enhanced by their group value.
The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
