A Saxon inhumation was found during excavations at Oliver Cromwell's Battery when a trench was cut across the vallum at the northeast corner in August 1930. The inhumation was extended, orientated south-north and was accompanied by grave goods of a spearhead, a bronze hanging bowl and a seax. The grave goods indicate a late seventh century date for burial.
