Three Mithraic altars found in this area suggest the probable site of a Mithraeum. (RIB) Number 1994, found in or before 1725 at Castlesteads, now lost; inscribed 'to the Sun-god Mithras'. RIB Number 1992,found in or before 1694 built into a stone wall at Castlesteads, now lost; inscribed 'to the Invincible Sun-god'. RIB Number 1993, found at Castlesteads before 1604, is now at Rokeby.
