Description

The monument consists of a cave containing archaeological deposits situated on a steep, wooded slope. The outer chamber measures approximately 1.5m to 2m wide and 1.3m high with a small platform outside the entrance. The cave extends 6m into the hillside and beyond this is a smaller passage, measuring approximately 0.5m by 0.8m that extends at least another 25m into the hillside. This is more regularly round in section. The cave has evidence for prehistoric activity associated with it, in the form of scatters of flint.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of prehistoric settlement, ritual and funerary practices. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of associated archaeological features and deposits.

The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive.
