Lynchets 850m west of Ridgeway Farm

A Scheduled Monument in Bishopstone, Swindon

Bishopstone strip lynchets

Uploader's Comments

The Bishopstone strip lynchets probably date from the 12th century and maybe Anglo-Saxon in origin. Generally it is thought to be the result of intensive ploughing and the gradual displacement of topsoil down the slope. These are particularly fine specimens the horizontal terraces being an average of 12m wide and the risers some 3 to 4m high.
