Description

The monument comprises the remains of an unenclosed settlement of prehistoric date represented by cropmarks visible on oblique aerial photographs.

The monument lies in arable farmland at around 15m OD close to the N edge of the Montrose Basin. In the central part of the site are the remains of a circular ring ditch house defined by a ditch some 2m wide which encloses an area some 12-15m in diameter. The interior of the ring ditch is occupied by a dense dark cropmark which may represent the remains of deposits associated with the occupation of the house.

The E part of the site is demarcated by a broad dark

cropmark representing a former stream draining into the Montrose Basin. Immediately to the W of this feature are two sharply defined but irregularly shaped cropmarks some 6m in maximum width, which may represent the remains of former buildings. Numerous other less well defined cropmarks are visible on the site including many small pits

and diffuse dark features, the latter again possible representing the remains of domestic structures.

The surrounding area is rich in the remains of prehistoric settlement and economic activity. The area to be scheduled encompasses the visible features and an area around them in which traces of associated activity may be expected to survive. It is sub-rectangular with maximum dimensions of 190m ENE-WSW by 120m as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to add to our understanding of prehistoric settlement and economy. Its significance is greatly enhanced by its association with the wider landscape of prehistoric settlement in the vicinity.
