Description

The monument comprises a settlement of later prehistoric date. The monument was first scheduled in 1971. It is being rescheduled in order to extend and clarify the extent of the scheduled area.

The monument is set on a terrace on the NW flank of Hopekist Rig, at around 300m OD. It consists of two house platforms and a scooped yard. The platforms measure about 10m and 8m in diameter respectively. Each has a low crescentic scarp in the NE sector and a ring-ditch. Ring-ditches such as these have been found on excavation to represent the remains of timber roundhouses of later prehistoric date. The southerly of the two ring-ditches has a low stone wall on its outer lip. Immediately downslope of the two platforms is a scooped yard measuring about 12m by about 8m, dug into the slope to a depth of about 2m. Taken together, the house platforms with ring-ditches and the scooped yard represent a settlement of later prehistoric date.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is rectangular with maximum dimensions of 60m NE-SW by 40m NW-SE, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
