Description

The monument consists of the remains of a galleried dun, a fortified structure of Iron Age date, probably occupied into the early medieval period.

The dun is approached by a substantial boulder causeway. Debris obscures the inner and outer faces of the defences. These appear to be well preserved: most of the outer wall can be discerned (an approximate measurement would be 18m NE-SW by 17m transversely). There is an interior wall with the remains of corbelled cells on the NW and SE sides.

The area to be scheduled is irregular and measures a maximum of 80m E-W by 25m N-S, to include the dun and the causeway as shown in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance because it is a well preserved example of a late prehistoric defensive settlement. It provides evidence, and has the potential to provide further evidence through excavation, for construction methods, domestic occupation, material culture and land use in the later prehistoric period. The importance of the monument is enhanced by the possibility of continuity of use into the medieval period suggested by local tradition.
