Description

The monument comprises a dun of prehistoric date, visible as an upstanding stone structure. The monument is being rescheduled in order to clarify the extent of the scheduled area, and to extend protection to buried archaeological deposits in the immediate vicinity of the visible structure.

The monument lies at a height of around 170m OD in an area of conifer plantation. It consists of a sub-circular dun measuring some 18m in external diameter, defined by a wall spread to about 5m wide and standing up to 1.5m high. Sections of both the outer and inner faces of the wall are visible. The wall has an entrance gap to the WSW, measuring approximately 1m wide by about 3m long, with two opposing door jambs set some 2m in from the outer edge.

Duns such as this are fortified settlement sites of later prehistoric date. The visible structure is likely to have been the focus of a small defended farming settlement, other elements of which may be expected to survive below ground in its immediate vicinity.

The area proposed for scheduling comprises the remains described and an area around them within which related material may be expected to be found. It is circular with a diameter of 45m, as marked in red on the accompanying map extract.
