Description

The monument is a farmstead of the pre-improvement period. There are remains of a rectangular building measuring 16.8m (NNE-SSW) internally. The building appears to be that shown on an estate map of 1810 and the first edition OS 6? map, which has now been reduced to its turf-covered footings. On the terrace immediately WNW of the building there is a rectangular enclosure measuring 42.5m (WNW-ESE) by 40m transversely internally, the interior having been slightly scooped into the slope. The enclosure is defined by the heavily robbed remains of a stone wall on the WNW and ESE and possibly on the NNE. On the NNE side of the enclosure there are the remains of a rectangular stone structure measuring 11.3m (NW-SE) by 8.5m transversely overall. There are remains of two possible rectangular buildings within the enclosure and to the NE a small area of cultivation ridges. Within the sheepfold to the S are the remains of a number of enclosures.

Statement of Scheduling

The monument is of national importance to the theme of pre-improvement settlement and agriculture. The monument, which is the remains of the farm and, importantly, part of the field system, has good field characteristics. The houses are not built on platforms dug into the hillside, an unusual feature in itself. Taken with the farmstead to the N adjacent to Milnholm Cottage, and the scheduled motte to the N, it is of national importance to the themes of the organisation and development of the pre-improvement landscape.
