The monument is a small pre-improvement farmstead, set on a terrace above Mid Grain (burn) and the Clerkhill Burn. It comprises the remains of a rectangular building measuring 9.9m by 2.5m internally joined on the SE by two rectangular enclosures (22.7m by 19.5m and 29m by 27m) containing the remains of a possible second rectangular buidling and a small, circular turf-banked enclosure. There are fragmentary banks around. An area 60m NE-SW by 55m transversely is proposed for scheduling.
The monument is of particular interest because it seems always to have lacked adjacent arable land. This and its marginal position suggest that, unlike the other pre-improvement settlements of the area, it served a pastoral function.
