The monument comprises the remains of a promontory fort with evidence of long occupation.
The monument comprises the top of a rocky promontory on top of which excavation in the 1970s has demonstrated the survival of extensive remains of prehistoirc, early historic and medieval foritifed settlement, including a vitrified wall. Substantial areas of the fort were not investigated and in these areas significant remains will survive.
The area proposed for scheduling measures 140m NE-SW by a maximum of 50m NW-SE, as marked in red on the attached map.

The monument is of national importance as a later prehistoric and early historic defended settlement which has demonstrated its potential to provide important information about the form and economy of such sites. Additionally, it produced evidence of later medieval settlement in a non-urban, non-high-status (eg castle or abbey) context. Such evidence is rare.
