Description

The monument comprises the remains of a well-preserved medieval moated homestead and is located near to Hanmer Church on the northern side of a pasture field. The site measures 100m WNW-ESE x 85m N-S and consists of a low lying oval mound with a maximum height of 2.5m, which is probably glacial in origin. The sides of the mound have been scarped, and it is surrounded by a wide ditch, 10m-12m in width, and on the south and north-east, an outer bank. The top is gently sloping, and the whole is grass covered.

The monument is of national importance for its potential to enhance our knowledge of medieval settlement. The monument is well preserved and is an important relic of the medieval landscape. It retains significant archaeological potential, with a strong probability of the presence of intact archaeological deposits and structural evidence. The scheduled area comprises the remains described and areas around them within which related evidence may be expected to survive. It follows the fence line in the north-west and skirts the outer bank on its presumed line at a 5m distance.
